One important aspect of the U.S. justice system is the principle “innocent until proven guilty”. Relating to that principle is the frequently used question “if you have nothing to hide?”. The question is posed when alleging that if an illegal act has not been committed, then the person being asked should concede to those making the request to a search of person and/or property.
A rational and logical response in keeping with the spirit of the law is; if you have nothing to find, then there is nothing to hide, so don’t bother me by asking.
Note: keeping your mouth shut, the best answer might be, talk to my attorney.

Can there be identified anything that is useless before one's encounter with such note (source)?

What I am quite but not completely sure of is that I would support not preventing anyone from not doing what they do not want to do. However, in some situations I would not recommend such behavior.
