One guess why my Lord chose to provide free will is because if He didn't, He would have to be monitoring (babysitting) approximately 8.5 billion people* day and night. Which might strain His other activities such as crating galaxies and such matters.

Footnote: What a bore that (babysitting) would be, which is my opinion. His probably differs.
