There is some wisdom contained in the judicial system. Such as the universality of motive. Even bullies and their targets each and all have motives. Even every nation's leader has their motives. Even the innocents* have motives. Sometimes people agree with the motives sometimes they do not.
Russia and Ukraine. Two nations with lots of motives, each a lot to win, each a lot to lose. Not a person unmotivated by their own motives.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability. That, on judgement day penance may be translated to the language of individual responsibility and will fail the Judge's inquiry and be passed on as the administration of justice.
