When a person or group of people (village or cult) convince themselves, they are their own savior, their personal or group salvation recedes as an option to protect themselves from themselves. For example, Jim Jones, Jonestown massacre Guyana, 1978. It became the self-annihilation of a village/group/cult at the behest of Jim Jones. Figuratively and literally, they drank the "cool-aid". Just as certain as the sun rising, the nature of human beings is not likely to vary enough in the short term.
