Politicians are seeking to achieve their political goals if the solution to a problem is the intervention of government. The "government" is comprised of citizens who are no more or less capable or qualified to solve the problem in the free market as they will be qualified to solve the same problems in the government. The main benefit is that the government gives them the protection from prosecution for failure and misbehavior.
