Politicians and governments fail because they convince themselves they are the end, not the means to an end. The end is the freedom and liberty of all people. Educating people to maximize their freedom and liberty is the greatest success.
When government believes it is smarter or more educated than society it will ultimately become dictatorial. It has to in order to prove its belief. (To itself.)
