Whimsical moments: There exists a TV commercial (1) of a girl standing in the kitchen with her mother behind her who after rinsing (implies washing) dinner dishes is putting the dishes into the dishwasher. The girl wisely asks, so what is a dishwasher for? That is the set-up as a metaphor for (drumroll) government. What is it for? It sure doesn't provide a useful function. Look at society.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability.
