Thinking back to days long gone I remember hearing or reading the phrase "collapse of civilization". The expression has bewildered me since the beginning. Today I realize that the phrase is a euphemism for the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. What is more accurately happening is that the civilized abandon those that are reverting to an uncivilized state of existence. Like what is happening now.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability. That, on judgement day penance may be translated to the language of individual responsibility and will fail the Judge's inquiry and be passed on as the administration of justice.
