It always (relative to eternity) has been and will forever be existential for those who are insane (evil). To maintain their chaotic insanity, they know they can never be wrong and can never relinquish decision making (power) after they imagine they have hold of it. If they are forced to confront their fear of reality their fantasy will disappear or possibly just as likely they will lose control of their minds. Some call it madness.
Note: Not a professional. Simply an old man's perception of his own reality. Maybe I am right or maybe I am wrong. I'll discuss that with God when I inevitably meet Him. I'm hoping and praying meeting Him happens on good terms. Or perhaps God will have better plans for my spiritual destiny alongside my wife who accompanied me through most of this human adventure.
I love God and I love my wife, forever if He is willing.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability. That, on judgement day penance may be translated to the language of individual responsibility and will fail the Judge's inquiry and be passed on as the administration of justice.
