While rummaging through memories of men who made wise recommendations, I encountered a man near the pinnacle. His TV screen name was Sgt Schultz. (1) Cast in the series Hogan's Heros. The simplistic phrase/line that places him among my list of top wise ones was "I know nothing". Prudent position to start from. The directions to go from that point are less likely to include downward. Sometimes I have to remind myself that indeed I know nothing that will have a useful outcome.
