"Thinking" about it. (Not too smart in the first place.) It is contemplated that an intelligent person will not assert they are smart! A wise person (intelligent) realizes that there is only one of two sides to that claim that will be demonstrated. That side is not the smart side. For that reason, the usual comment has been "At the risk of appearing/being stupid". The phrase "At the risk of appearing smart." has not entered into my ears that I can remember.
A question develops whether someone is complimenting/helping or cursing/impeding another person if they comment that the person is smart?

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability.
