I came to the conclusion (pure speculation) immediately after that guy/girl in the white outfit smacked my little butt, that I had less to no reasons to concern myself with another person's problem rather than the immediate and long terms obstacles that confronted me. I think that situation is the earliest to which the expression cut-the-cord (umbilical) applies.
