During the 70’s and 80’s business conglomerates were a fad. Despite the triggering belief that bigger results in better, what was discovered in many of these adventures is that piling the problems of businesses on top of one another led to a loss of efficiency and profitability. This is the opposite result than was expected. Efficiency and profitability were two important reasons the programs were adopted. The process merged segments into unmanageable operations led by less qualified and/or inexperienced cross-segment management.
The moral of the story is that government, which supposedly is a not-for-profit (of the taxpayer) entity, has transitioned into a conglomerate that is increasingly becoming more destructive to society (the citizens). Government growth is indeed not sustainable.
The bigger they are the harder they fall.
Or, from the biblical frame of reference. Metaphorically the Tower of Babel (or babbling politicians) will collapse of their own hubris and ignorance.
