It is estimated that there are more than 300,000,000 guns owned almost entirely by law abiding U.S. citizens. Solution, register 300,000,000 guns so you can possibly catch a person with an unregistered gun. Sheer lunacy prevails in this reasoning. Just like the rationale for the TSA.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability.
