The circumstances in the VA healthcare system are the inevitable result of a work environment where you offer a job to someone who tells you they care, and they really don’t care at all. Jobs in government have been defined to compound the problem by making the non-caring person also not responsible for their decisions. It is a tragedy waiting for the inevitable catastrophe. To add insults to injuries or, in the case of the VA, deaths, the people who are supposed to supervise the behavior care even less. If those supervisors doth protest too much, I would suggest that because they have allowed the circumstances to persist. Reality dictates they don’t care. They could have recognized their personal limitations at any time and left the position or found someone who could fix the problem.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability. That, on judgement day penance may be translated to the language of individual responsibility and will fail the Judge's inquiry and be passed on as the administration of justice.
