The “government” are your neighbors who will assist you only if you pay them with your taxes. Your fellow Americans are your neighbors who will help you when you are in need. If the government shuts down the worst case is that neighbors who will not assist will more likely than not be your neighbors who work for the government. More often than not you can count on your fellow Americans. Those are our values.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability. That, on judgement day penance may be translated to the language of individual responsibility and will fail the Judge's inquiry and be passed on as the administration of justice.
