It seems to be an acceptable pervasive attitude of most politicians that taxes should serve the purpose of controlling social behavior. Not only through the discriminatory tax laws but also the use of the taxes collected.
To some degree history is repeating itself. The tea party activity is "the canary in the mine". It is a harbinger of the inevitable future if the path politicians follow is not changed.
