This is a metaphor for the position republicans have allowed themselves to be put in which they don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, or decided to let themselves be bullied into, or don’t object to, or don’t care, or don’t think it is a problem, or at worst sympathize with the robber.
If you are confronted by a robber who demands your money, your keys, your jewelry, your phone, the shirt off your back, the pants covering your legs, the shoes covering your feet, and then he calls you a terrorist, at what point do you protect yourself?
