Liberalism, progressivism fails because it is based on dependability.
It starts with a promise to the undependable in society that they can depend on the government.
Government depends on people who choose to be dependable. That group of people DO NOT depend on government.
The dependable ones arrive at a point when they can no longer sustain themselves and continue to meet the needs of the undependable (government).
What happens when the undependable ones, including those in government are left to depend upon themselves?
It is a circuitous route to get to the point that individual responsibility is necessary to survive.
It is that individual responsibility combined with concern for their fellow citizens that was an important guiding force of those who initially were dependable.
What will be the final outcome?
Most likely the final outcome will be what those who are dependable want the outcome to be.
E.G., Find out how dependable citizens dealt with Marie Antoinette who turned out to not be dependable.

Maybe the most self-beneficial reconciling penance administered by/for/to humans is performed by politicians who have a blinding trust in the concept employed as preventative responsibility contained within the theory of plausible deniability.
